A man is dead following a police pursuit through Hazel Dell on Saturday afternoon. The man, whose name is being withheld at this time, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.

Clark County sheriff’s deputies responded to the Alderbrook Apartments at 9500 N.E. 19th Ave., in Hazel Dell at 3:05 p.m. Saturday to reports of gunshots. Witnesses described a man armed with a handgun in the parking lot; the suspect fled in a vehicle as deputies arrived on the scene.

Deputies at the scene determined there was probable cause to arrest the suspect for fourth-degree assault and firearms charges. The deputy following the suspect began a short pursuit before the vehicle stopped at Northeast 91st Street and 21st Avenue.

Deputies attempted to get the driver to exit the vehicle to no avail and called for an armored vehicle and an unmanned aerial system, or UAS, for assistance, reporting that the suspect appeared to be gripping something. After 10-15 minutes at the scene, the UAS operator reported to deputies that it appeared the suspect was deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and called for paramedics to confirm.

Deputies were able to recover the suspect’s firearm and confirmed the suspect was deceased.

The medical examiner’s office has assumed control of the death investigation.
