Our country has a problem. Every year in America, 45,000 people are found dead with gunshot wounds; 12 children are killed by guns each day. From schools to parades and city streets, no corner of our country is immune.
Our state has been a national leader in the movement to save the lives of adults and children in our nation. But we are not done yet either; 864 people were shot to death in our state in 2020. It is a number 864 too high.
There are a number of reforms that we should enact that do not harm lawful gun owners but can keep guns out of the wrong hands. First is a requirement for training on all guns, which can lower accidental deaths. Enacting and enforcing safe-storage requirements is important, too. Responsible gun owners should safely store weapons. Other reforms, like bulk gun restrictions, can also be helpful, but need to be specific and respect the Second Amendment.
These basic reforms should already be in place, but they aren’t. There is no excuse for letting kids like me die on your watch. Let every representative know. If you don’t work to save our lives, you don’t have our votes.
