Letter: ‘Personal’ decisions impact others

News stories are rife with people acting out to have it known they want the final say on masking, vaccines and unproven drugs to treat COVID-19.

I respect personal freedoms as long as they stay personal and only you suffer the consequences. However when your choice has a negative effect on anyone else, this is no longer “personal.”

Your “personal” choice has pushed us in the medical field to physical and emotional breakdowns. Many of us have seen more death and suffering that we would in a lifetime because of your “rights.”

What if we respect your rights to engage in dangerous behaviors that caused you to be sick with COVID, and we chose not to treat you? Most anti-vax and anti-mask people with COVID who show up in the emergency room get religion and a change of heart. What if I tell you to go home and you deal with the consequences of your right to ignorant and dangerous behavior?

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
