Letter: Keep trails free of blight

By Russell Gilmore, VANCOUVER
Published: February 18, 2022, 6:00am

I enjoyed the article on the Ellen Davis Trail (“Power walk,” The Columbian, Feb. 10). We live near it and I ride my bicycle on it often. The warnings around parking areas make me sad, but it is true. My wife will not walk the trail because of perceived danger.

For years I have ridden all the trails in Vancouver and Portland. Just today I rode the Burnt Bridge Creek Trail where there are more campers and trash than the last time. At one of the parking areas there was an apparently stolen (no license plate, and stripped) car. Vancouver is not as bad as Portland yet, and I hope we can stop it before it gets there. If we don’t get tough on the criminals and drug-users but help the people who are really trying to improve themselves, we will end up being the cesspool that Portland has become.
