The Evergreen Public Schools Board of Directors on Tuesday evening appointed Jacqueline Weatherspoon to fill the board’s vacancy for director Position 4.

Weatherspoon, who is stepping into the position following Rachael Rogers’ resignation last month, is set to be sworn in at the board’s March 8 meeting.

Weatherspoon has three children attending schools in the district, has regularly volunteered in their schools and has served as a member of the Evergreen Public Schools Equity Advisory Committee for the last two years.

In her interview at the board’s meeting on Feb. 15, Weatherspoon said she’d seek to focus on equity and representation in education if appointed to the position.

“My kids started at Harmony Elementary. When I was there, I noticed there wasn’t anyone who looked like my children in the building. They would go all day, and they wouldn’t see anyone that looked like themselves,” said Weatherspoon, who is Black. “I made a point of being there and volunteering, because I really believe representation matters.”

Her appointment will last through December 2023, and she will be eligible to run for a four-year term in November 2023.
