I would like to thank The Columbian staff for providing a unique opportunity for readers to seriously consider the fragility of democracy as it begins to disappear throughout the world. In the Dec. 30, 2021, edition, on Page A6 the main story was titled, “Since Jan. 6, GOP has prepared for next time.” On A7, the main story was titled, “Dismantling Democracy: Police arrest 7 journalists in latest example of suppression in Hong Kong.”
Concerning Hong Kong, the Chinese Communist Party is very honest and transparent in its efforts to eradicate democracy and its threats and evils. And, 6,500 miles to the east, the Republican Party is blatantly and obviously engaged in ridding Americans of democracy by employing over 30 various voter-suppression laws in about 20 states.
Additionally, the Republican Party in a substantial number of states are in the process of attempting to place their own mouthpieces in various state positions that could possibly allow them to completely make a mockery of our greatest individual right: the right to vote.
In the ’60s and ’70s I was regularly told to “Love America or leave it” if I didn’t agree with our leaders. I chose to stay. Now what?
