A pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run crash Monday night in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 just south of the Interstate 5 Bridge, according to the Portland Police Bureau.

A police bureau statement said officers were dispatched to the crash at 8:19 p.m. and found the pedestrian had died.

Officers initially believed the driver of the vehicle had remained at the scene. However, the police bureau said Tuesday that the drivers who stayed at the scene were not involved in the crash.

“This was a hit-and-run. The suspect left the scene before officers arrived and did not return,” the police bureau said in an updated statement.

Authorities closed the southbound lanes of I-5 just north of the bridge in Vancouver for a few hours. Southbound traffic was diverted from I-5 to state Highway 14, the statement said.

The police bureau’s Traffic Investigations Unit is continuing to investigate.
