A Vancouver man was sentenced Tuesday to 8¼ years in prison for shooting his then-girlfriend in the back of the neck in November at their east Vancouver apartment.

Logan Fouse, 42, pleaded guilty in Clark County Superior Court to first-degree domestic violence assault. One count of second-degree attempted murder and two counts of fourth-degree assault were dismissed.

Vancouver police said in court records that the bullet was lodged in the victim’s neck, and she did not have feeling on one side of her body.

The woman said Tuesday she is still paralyzed in her right arm but that her doctors expect she’ll eventually make a full recovery.

She said she believed the shooting stemmed from Fouse abusing alcohol while also taking medication. She asked the judge for leniency so that Fouse could seek mental health treatment.

Fouse apologized to the victim and her family and said that he knows he made a mistake.

Judge John Fairgrieve said he appreciated that Fouse was showing remorse and accepting responsibility. Still, the victim is lucky she was not killed, he said.

Police were called at about 5:30 p.m. Nov. 3 to the Fishers Mill Apartments, 1000 S.E. 160th Ave.

According to an affidavit of probable cause, neighbors reported hearing the couple arguing all day. One neighbor said she heard the woman screaming, then a door slam and a vehicle speeding off. The same neighbor heard the couple arguing again, then a loud noise like something had dropped. Afterward, she heard the woman crying, and an ambulance arrived soon after.

Police said the victim was alert, and she said she did not believe the shooting was an accident, court records state.

Fouse initially told police the shooting was an accident. He also said he had a “lapse” before the shooting and could not remember when he pointed the gun at his girlfriend, court records say.
