Our community has an amazing resource: The Caring Closet. It is a nonprofit volunteer organization, providing donations of new and used durable medical equipment to those in need, free. It has provided its services to over 5,000 people since the beginning of this year. I have been working with the organization for over three years now, first searching for housing for low-income and homeless individuals, and now as a resident services coordinator. All of our residents are on Medicaid and have very limited spending money. The Caring Closet is open three days a week, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., a total of nine hours per week.
I was told today that the landlord will not be renewing the organization’s lease at the end of June. This is devastating. The Caring Closet is looking for another space in which to continue to provide this essential service to our (mostly senior) residents. Not only does this help those without much money and no insurance; the organization also recycles this equipment and keeps it out of the landfills.
It is a win-win-win situation. It is also a bright spot of sunshine and hope in a world full of chaos and confusion.
