Letter: Stop this ceaseless slaughter

I read the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, again. It still reads: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” The thought is succinct, with no asterisks, footnotes or smarmy-legalese exceptions.

“Well regulated Militia” strongly implies discipline and control of the use of guns. There is absolutely no implication there that every evil person who wants to kill or injure people should have uncontrolled access to guns.

To what “well regulated Militia” did the boy who murdered 19 children and two teachers with a gun in Uvalde, Texas, belong? In service of what “well regulated Militia” did he massacre people with a gun? I have found no mention of his membership in any “well regulated Militia.” To what discipline and control was his access to, and use of, a gun subjected?

I am quite sure the authors of the Second Amendment did not intend to protect the right to bear arms to kill schoolchildren or other innocents. Lily-livered lawmakers need to quit cowering from the NRA and bring common sense to gun possession. Stop this ceaseless slaughter.
