Letter: Solving gun violence takes time

By Ed Nelson, Vancouver
Published: June 12, 2022, 6:00am

Seat belts took a long time (decades) to be accepted and used by the American public. Solving the gun problem in the U.S. will be the same.

We must immediately stop all production, manufacturing, possession of, selling, assembly of (ghost guns) assault-type weapons and their accessories, ammunition and parts except to authorized governmental agencies.

We increase penalties dramatically, minimum one-year mandatory jail/prison time for violations with very limited plea bargaining.

It will take time and the supply of these weapons on our streets will dry up over time. This is an ugly situation and requires draconian action. Now is the time to act decisively for our public safety.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
