Bellingham — One body has been recovered and another person is missing after an apparent rafting accident Tuesday afternoon near Deming.

Whatcom County Fire District 14 and 19 crews and Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office rescue teams were called at 2:56 p.m. Tuesday, June 14, to the 10400 block of Mount Baker Highway in Deming near the Snowline Inn for a water rescue.

District 14 Chief Jerry DeBruin, who was not among those who responded to the incident, confirmed that one body had been recovered and another person was missing. He said the search is continuing Wednesday morning.

“I sounds like a very sad circumstance,” DeBruin told The Bellingham Herald.

DeBruin said that two people had either been rescued or managed to get to safety after an apparent rafting accident, but DeBruin said he was not certain if only four people had been involved in the incident.

The Bellingham Herald has reached out to District 19 and the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office for more information about the incident.
