Letter: City takes lead on climate action

“Vancouver sets nation-leading goals to combat climate change” was the June 9 KGW News headline, highlighting our Vancouver City Council adopting a Climate Priority Resolution and Early Action Package at the June 6 city council meeting. “The City of Vancouver is advancing its positive direction to achieve the leading-edge climate action goals it endorsed in 2021” was the press release announcement on the city’s website.

One year ago, we were heading into the deadly heat dome that gravely impacted our community. In response, our city council determined that setting aggressive goals for the Climate Action Plan would put Vancouver on a decisive pathway to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and build resilience in the face of what science is telling us requires urgent action now. We cannot afford the opposite: inaction, passivity and delay are what will harm our city and community most.

I’m writing to thank our mayor and city council, city staff and consultants, and all in the community who support this effort. Strategies and actions that will carry us forward to achieve these goals will be adopted by city council in August. For more information, here is the city’s webpage for climate action: https://www.beheardvancouver.org/climate.
