Letter: Second Amendment about defense

By Caleb Patterson, Vancouver
Published: June 19, 2022, 6:00am

The Second Amendment is about more than firearms, beginning with a “well regulated militia being necessary.” Were militias properly regulated, many problems wouldn’t exist. For example, a militia is “every able-bodied adult”; able-body includes mind. That’s right, the Second Amendment provides for mental health screening for all adults, among other things.

We’ve been trying to organize a defense against COVID-19. Had we had a properly regulated militia, we would have had proper masks for the defense of all. The Second Amendment is about defending ourselves against all enemies.

Will we be able to defend against future viruses? Floods? Earthquakes? Drugs? Mental health crises? Climate change? Or Russian invasion? That depends on the Second Amendment.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
