A Vancouver man was arrested Tuesday after allegedly shooting a male who he said was breaking into his vehicle in his driveway.

Police responded to the shooting at about 1:50 a.m. at 203 S.E. 148th Ave., in Vancouver’s East Mill Plain neighborhood, according to a news release from the Vancouver Police Department.

The vehicle’s owner, identified as Jacob A. Cantrell, called 911 to report that he confronted an unknown male who was breaking into his vehicle and damaging it with a shovel, according to the news release.

Cantrell told investigators that he shot the person multiple times in his driveway, the news release said. The male who was shot was taken to an area hospital and remains in critical condition, the police department said.

The identity or age of the person shot was not released.

An RV parked in the driveway of a neighboring residence was struck by a round, the police department said. No other injuries were reported.

Detectives interviewed Cantrell, 33, and arrested him on suspicion of first-degree assault. He was booked into the Clark County Jail, according to the news release.

The Vancouver Police Department Major Crimes Unit is continuing to investigate.
