Letter: Sanity needed for gun reform

It is time someone stated the obvious: The Second Amendment to the Constitution is in dire need of being rewritten. It was passed by Congress in 1789 and ratified in 1791. It was written with the intention of ensuring “a well-regulated militia.” Apart from gangs of street thugs like The Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers, we don’t have militias anymore. Today it is being used as a crutch for the NRA and gun manufacturers to reap boundless profits while they bring death and destruction to our country, more so than in other places in the world.

Does anyone seriously believe that the Founding Fathers intended for every citizen to have unlimited access to high-tech weapons of war that can kill large numbers of people in seconds? They conceived of the Second Amendment in a time of single-shot muskets. The Second Amendment is hopelessly out of date. As the mass slaughter of innocent Americans continues on a weekly basis, when will sanity take hold again and meaningful gun reform occur?
