Letter: Chronic Weapon Disease in people

In response to the “Our Readers’ Views” letter about the AR-15 being misunderstood (“AR-15 is natural evolution,” Our Readers’ Views, June 15), let’s also set the record straight regarding the new FIM-93FE Stinger missile system used for shooting flying elk.

It may look military-ish, a miniature bazooka in black, but it’s not. It comes in a designer suitcase, with easy assembly a teen can handle. Don’t worry about powder burns and ear damage; the missile is ejected mechanically. Its rocket doesn’t ignite before it’s well away from the shooter and heading toward the elk, flying moose or zombie deer. The pistol grip, patterned after those in video arcades, contains a battery coolant pack, so neither battery nor barrel can overheat the way an AR-15 can. How nice if the military had first invented what the Stinger and AK-15 have. Sadly, the Stinger remains unfit for military use, because it shoots only one projectile at a time. To shoot a flock of flying elk, it would be better to naturally evolve into something like an AR-15 designed for large-capacity magazines. It’s just progress.

Let’s not confuse Chronic “Wafting” Disease in elk with Chronic Weapon Disease in people. Be safe out there.
