Letter: Make America safe

In response to the article “Justices rule in favor of gun rights” (24 June), I find myself wondering when we Americans, will learn. The gun culture of the late 19th century today seems romantic because of Hollywood movies of steely-eyed good guys, but a lot people died before stricter gun control. I have to confess I’m becoming afraid — for my grandchildren in their schools, for our society on the streets and in the stores and malls, for our American culture. It is not a romantic time.

I have communicated via email my concerns with the people who speak for us in Congress — Jaime Herrera Beutler, Patty Murray, and Maria Cantwell — all of whom have assured me they are also concerned and working on it. Herrera Beutler told me all about the bipartisan bill working its way through the Senate; a bill all the news reports call mild and moderate but a start. But it is not enough! My grandchildren are outdoors now, in their schools now. We all go to grocery stores and malls now. Horrifyingly, guns are now the leading cause of death in children. People are dying now.

It is time to do something. Make America great again? I’d settle for make America safe again.
