Letter: Many work to welcome neighbors

By Jeff Newport, Vancouver
Published: March 10, 2022, 6:00pm

I want to thank the many members of our community who have stepped up in support of the Afghan refugees who recently arrived in Clark County.

The refugees, men who supported the American military in the Afghan war, and their wives, sisters and brothers, daughters and sons, are now our neighbors.

Lutheran Family Services is coordinating this work. Nikki Chung has worked overtime leading efforts to find housing, assist with employment, learn to speak English, use our transportation system and navigate Vancouver’s grocery stores, health care facilities and other aspects of our city. The Herzog Farms neighborhood has contributed furniture, clothing and financial donations. The Giving Closet has provided warm clothing for those arriving who were unprepared for the weather here. Many volunteers are also engaged each day in these activities.

A huge thanks to everyone who is involved in this important work.
