OLYMPIA – Fliers have begun circulating online advertising a rally “for America” planned for Saturday at the Capitol Campus organized by the Capital City Proud Boys.

According to the fliers, the group is protesting the treatment of those who were arrested in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot. The fliers call them political prisoners and allege they have been denied basic rights while imprisoned.

A convoy is planning to depart for the rally at 11:15 a.m. Saturday from the Park and Ride at the intersection of Interstate 5 and State Route 512 near Tacoma. Once the convoy arrives at noon in Olympia, the group plans to march through the streets, then return to the Tivoli Fountain on the Capitol Campus.

From 1 to 4 p.m. the group plans to rally for the release of prisoners involved in the Jan. 6 riot.

Kellie Braseth, the city of Olympia’s communications director, said the Olympia Police Department will be monitoring the situation and working to learn more about it.

“They are working with the State Patrol, and will be reaching out to communicate with any impacted neighborhoods, residents or businesses when they know more,” she said.

Braseth said Olympia police will follow the department’s Guidelines for Demonstrations and Crowd Control, which can be found online. They include protecting First Amendment rights and prioritizing de-escalation.
