Prep highlights: Camas baseball edges Kelso to open season

Ethan Hubbel pitched five shutout innings as Camas baseball held off Kelso 2-1 for a season-opening win Thursday.

Hubbel struck out eight, walked none and allowed three hits, all singles.

Boston Jensen pitched two innings in relief. The Hilanders scored once in the bottom of the seventh and stranded the tying run on third base.

Camas scored both of its runs in the fifth inning. Jake Swenson singled to drive in Tyler Stewart, then scored on a double by Diego Trujillo.

Riley Kirk went 2 for 3 for Kelso (2-1).

Stars of the day

  • Trenton Hamilton, Washougal baseball, went 2 for 3 with three RBI, including a two-run double, in a 15-5 win over Centralia.
  • Nathanael Merritt, Prairie baseball, went 2 for 3 with three RBI in a 13-3 win over Heritage.
  • Jaden Rippelmeyer, Mountain View baseball, allowed just one hit and struck out eight over six innings in a 11-0 win over Evergreen.
  • Dylan Osborne, Union baseball, threw a complete-game two-hitter with eight strikeouts and no walks in the Titans’ 2-1 win over Westview of Portland.
  • Esteban Johnson, Fort Vancouver baseball, went 3 for 4 with a solo home run and RBI single in a 6-4 loss to Oregon Class 6A Roosevelt of Portland.
  • Kyle Memarian and Jack Santic, Skyview baseball, combined for eight of the Storm’s 16 hits in a 23-0 win over Mark Morris in five innings. Memarian was 5 for 5 from the leadoff spot with a triple, two RBI and scored four runs. Santic, hitting second, was 3 for 4 with two doubles, two RBI and three runs.
  • Joey Roeper, Hudson’s Bay boys soccer, made two big saves for the Eagles as they won on penalties after a 1-1 tie with Mark Morris. The first save came early with the score 0-0, and the second was stopping the final PK by the Monarchs.
  • Nate Bertolino, Columbia River boys soccer, scored two goals as the Rapids shut out Ridgefield 3-0 with all the scoring in the second half.
