Clark County sheriff announces cutback in call response

Clark County Sheriff Chuck Atkins announced Monday that deputies will no longer respond to certain calls for service by the end of the month due to staffing shortages in all branches of the agency.

In a statement, Atkins said his pleas for support from the Clark County Council over rising crime and decreasing staff have gone unanswered and that the strain has become critical.

I-5 Bridge project staff says Oregon will administer tolling

Tolling for the proposed new Interstate 5 Bridge will be administered by the Oregon Department of Transportation, the Interstate Bridge Replacement Program staff announced Thursday.

The decision was made by the Oregon and Washington transportation departments and was based upon a need to know early in the bridge-planning process. By deciding early, ODOT can include the bridge in its upcoming search for tolling vendors and the implementation of its regional tolling program. The plan was approved by the Oregon Transportation Commission last week.

Fire destroys home on ‘extremely cluttered’ property west of Battle Ground

Three adults were displaced Wednesday after an extremely cluttered house west of Battle Ground burned down.

Clark-Cowlitz Fire Rescue, Clark County Fire District 3 and the Vancouver Fire Department were dispatched at 2:12 p.m. to 8710 N.E. 244th St., in the Cherry Grove area. A Clark-Cowlitz crew arrived in 7 minutes to find a single-story house on fire and could see fire and smoke from the windows in the living room and kitchen, according to a news release.

Vancouver man accused in fatal pellet-gun shooting

A Vancouver man is accused of fatally shooting a man in the torso with a pellet gun in July during an argument in east Vancouver.

Mickey Alan Day, 44, appeared Monday in Clark County Superior Court on suspicion of first-degree manslaughter. Judge David Gregerson set bail at $750,000, and Day is scheduled to be arraigned March 25.
