Weather Eye: Our tame March seems to be going out like a lamb

We are heading down the home stretch of March, and the new month of April joins us on Friday. I hope we won’t see any April Fools’ weather.

It appears March will go out like a lamb this year. We didn’t really see much of the lion this month, so I’ll call it a tame month as it goes in the record books.

We are still running below average in rainfall. Tonight, Monday and Wednesday are the only chances to add a small amount to the rain bucket.

Today should be cloudy, but unstable air from the south should move northward by tonight. Could we have a thunderstorm?

We could see a shower or two Monday. Cooler air from the opposite direction will bring light rain and more seasonable temperatures Wednesday.

After that, we’ll be home free, with partly sunny or partly cloudy skies — your choice — and highs back up into the low 60s. I hope that will last through the weekend, but that is a way off, so we’ll chat about that as we travel along this week.

As of 5 p.m. Saturday, rainfall here in Vancouver has totaled 2.74 inches in March, about two-thirds of an inch below normal. We managed a high of 67 degrees on the 22nd and a low of 26 degrees on the 10th. We failed to reach that elusive 70-degree mark, and it looks doubtful we will by Thursday. The leprechaun dropped the ball on that one this month, but we’ll see 70 degrees in April.

Speaking of April, it is my favorite month. Besides being my birth month, it is when we get those predictable April showers. You know what follows in May, right? Yep, we turn the tide in April and get in full swing with the spring season. The countryside greens up, and skies are a deep azure color that beckons and refreshes the soul.

In between the showers, the warmth of the sunshine can be felt upon the body. But we keep the umbrella handy and jump amid the rain puddles. It’s not as fickle as March, but April’s weather is still in a playful mood.

See you on Tuesday.
