Letter: Protect first-time homebuyers

I am so angry about foreign companies buying up our country. First it was office buildings, then apartments and farms; now it is starter homes.

On “60 Minutes” last week they featured a “company from Ontario, Canada” that is buying three-bed, two-bath starter homes all across the United States (starting in Florida and moving on). They pay all cash, no contingencies or inspections, close in 30 days. Then they do some work on them and rent them for outrageous prices, using our money as on the stock exchange as publicly traded.

I have been in the real estate business for over 53 years and first-time homebuyers were a delight to work with — being able to be a part of the American Dream! Now, someone with a down payment, pre-approved, is being taken out of the market due to foreign investors. It’s not right! Something has to be done!

Why is the United States allowing this to happen? Try buying up anything in most countries, and you cannot. This has to change, or our grandchildren will not stand a chance of becoming homeowners.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
