Letter: Postal Service needs common sense

I read the Seattle Times article “States sue over gas-fueled postal fleet” and I was appalled. The article confirmed my belief that the federal government tells us to do one thing, then it hypocritically does the opposite.

The Postal Service is going to replace a portion of their fleet with 165,000 vehicles that are gas-powered ones. Why not electric? The postal fleet is an ideal one to be replaced with electric vehicles. The daily delivery of mail must surely be less than 300 miles per delivery route. These vehicles start and stop constantly, which is a worst case for mileage efficiency of an internal combustion engine. They travel during their daily routes and then park overnight, which would be an ideal charging time. The postmaster that made this decision should be replaced with someone that has a modicum of common sense and accountability.
