I was so disappointed to see the “powers that be” have once again chosen light rail. If we lived in any other location, then yes. But light rail is going to destroy river commerce. I can’t help but wonder why common sense has been cast aside for wishful thinking. Do people not care for riverside commerce? Mitigating companies with cash for the loss of their commerce is really stupid. Once the lower bridge is there, it can’t be removed and neither can larger objects be barged one way or the other.
“It saves money,” they say. That may be so, but sometimes saving money is not the end all. It would have been better if light rail was set aside for a different project and yes, more money would be spent. Casting light rail alongside of Interstate 205 is a better answer. Without light rail, the bridge can be built with great height leaving interstate river commerce intact. One never knows what is around the corner, and someday we may need river traffic and it will not be there.
As per mitigating with electric vehicles: haven’t they heard of electric buses?
