Letter: Thoughts and prayers, again?

So it’s thoughts and prayers time once again as America endures yet another mass killing, another massacre. Once again it’s the American specialty: the deaths of children.

The left will blame guns, the right will blame mental illness, but they are both wrong. Other nations have guns, Canada for example. Every nation has citizens with mental health issues. Only America among the developed nations kills its own citizens at such a horrific rate with such frequency.

Why? Because we are a violent nation. Our games, our media, even our history books, glorify violence and teach that violence is an appropriate solution to any problem. Add to that the recent advent of zombies, zombie games, zombie movies, stories of mindless neighbors who want to kill you and feed on you, neighbors who have to be killed, and you have a perfect picture of our violent society. We are a violent nation. We love violence. We’re taught to be that way.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
