Letter: Republican apathy is troubling

Last-minute thoughts on the election:

The economy: Presidents are often blamed for a poor economy. I did not blame Republican presidents for the Great Recession or even the Great Depression. Both events were followed by the election of Democratic presidents. These and other downturns are often caused by external forces and not under government control. That is because our government is not socialist and the majority control of finance and/or business is in the private sector. However, people seem to vote with their pocketbook; likely that is where they keep their voting card.

Crime: Based on the events on Jan. 6, the attempt to block the constitutionally required peaceful transfer of power and Republican apathy and misinformation about these crimes, I don’t think the party can claim to be the law-and-order party.

Abortion: Texas is typical of states in the Southeast that have new abortion restrictions. It is also typical that child and maternal care in those states is poor. In fact, in a ranking of states plus D.C., Texas is last at 51st for child and maternal health care. Once the child is born they don’t seem to care very much for the mother or her child.
