Letter: Changes needed for elections

By Peter L. Williamson, Vancouver
Published: November 20, 2022, 6:00am

Stalin’s idiom: “it’s not who votes, it’s who counts the votes” should give pause to Americans. France’s nationwide election was in-person voting, paper ballots cast. France knew within 24 hours after polls closed their results.

What’s the problem, America? I suggest:

1. Election Day a national holiday. Everyone votes at their precinct.

2. Absentee (mail-in ballot) with provable reasons; military deployment or overseas employment. Absentee ballots must be received one week prior to polling day, no exceptions, no other early voting, period.

3. Contributions for national office limited to $10,000 per person per candidate. Corporations and PACs will be considered persons under this limit.

4. Contributions for local and state office shall be limited to said $10,000 per person per candidate. Again, corporations, PACs will be considered persons under this restriction. Candidates shall be allowed contributions only from constituents, corporations and PACs within their representation area. Corporations and PACs found to establish shell bases to contribute shall suffer financial penalty and the candidate receiving illicit funds disqualified.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
