Letter: Teachers need more assistance

It’s well known that teachers do a lot for our students, but don’t get paid enough. Teachers help our children learn, grade their work and evaluate their progress. Some teachers tutor students outside of the classroom if they need extra help. Yet they are not getting paid enough for their work.

Teachers these days are treated poorly. They are abused by parents and students and aren’t financially or emotionally compensated for their work. Teachers aren’t trained to handle emotionally disabled students; they are prepared to teach, not to be caretakers. If teachers are required to be caretakers, they should have training provided to them by the district to help them, and they should get a raise.

If teachers don’t get a raise, the district should provide the teachers with counselors or out-of-school therapists to deal with the demands of the classroom. Kids aren’t used to regular classrooms anymore, and the teachers do so much to try and help them get used to the average classroom setting. These things are very taxing on our teachers, so they not only need a raise but deserve it, and if not a raise, at least a safe space to talk about their classroom problems.
