Longtime sportswriter Paul Danzer will be honored with a tree-planting ceremony on Oct. 8.

In partnership with the City of Vancouver, 22 trees will be planted to form the Paul J. Danzer Grove at Biddlewood Park near where he lives.

Danzer worked for The Columbian from 1999 to 2016, authoring more than 4,000 stories. Many of those focused on community sports in Clark County, though he also covered the Portland Timbers and Portland Winterhawks.

Danzer currently writes for the Portland Tribune. He previously worked for the Daily Astorian and the Valley Times in Beaverton, Ore., where Danzer started his sportswriting career in 1983.

Michael LaLumiere, who hired Danzer at the Valley Times, organized the ceremony.

“Amazing people deserve recognition,” LaLumiere wrote in an announcement for the event. “I’ve known Paul for nearly 40 years, beginning when I hired him at the Valley Times based in Beaverton. From there he built a scenic highway made of friendships, dedication, humility and admiration. Paul’s been a beloved member of every newsroom he’s worked at.”

The ceremony starts at 10 a.m.
