Letter: Trump embarrasses country

The book “Bag Man” by Rachel Maddow is about “the wild crimes, audacious cover-up and spectacular downfall of a brazen crook in the White House.” No, it’s not about our former president but about former Vice President Spiro Agnew.

Agnew’s strategy was to call everyone liars, attack everyone involved with his prosecution and to encourage his supporters to be hostile toward them and journalists. Sound familiar?

Agnew could have spent years in prison but prosecutors were afraid then-President Richard Nixon would resign before they could convict Agnew of more serious crimes, in which case Agnew would have been president. Instead Agnew resigned, received a relative slap on the hands for tax evasion and walked away a disgraced public figure.

I hope former President Donald Trump receives not just a slap on the hands but jail or prison time for the current indictments and the potential ones regarding his attempt to interfere with the Georgia presidential election and the top-secret documents found at his Florida home. He has proven himself to be a disgraceful public figure and an embarrassment to our country. Let’s all hope our judicial system works the way it was intended.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
