Letter: Trump charges are specious

Donald Trump has pleaded “not guilty” to some very specious charges. What exactly did he do? He paid some porn actress to keep quiet about their affair. Wouldn’t you have done the same? And he phonied up business records to further hide the payoff. Again, wouldn’t you have done the same?

It’s quite clear that Trump committed crimes during his dubious presidency, the most serious being his removal of classified materials to Florida. But the present charges are just too trivial for words. And they will have the effect of turning The Donald into a martyr, along the lines of Saints Peter and Paul. And Joan of Arc. And Abe Lincoln and Gandhi. And maybe even Jesus. And you can bet that he won’t be shy about making such comparisons.

I know the mantra, that no man is above the law, but good judgment should always prevail. Unfortunately the New York prosecutor didn’t follow that rule, and we may end up paying a huge price for his failings, maybe even another term of Trump as president.
