Warm up your spring by writing, telling a true story

Enjoying all that joyous spring warmth and sunshine? Hmm, not so much?

Maybe it’s time to spend all that mandatory indoor time telling your neighbors a true tale from your life. “Everybody Has a Story,” The Columbian feature where readers write their own true-life stories, is looking for contributions.

What sorts of contributions? In recent months we’ve witnessed a marriage proposal that almost wasn’t; a wild horse that turned gentle and loving; a near-death mishap on a snowy mountain; and a truly deadly mishap on a Woodland elephant farm in the 1970s. All of these stories were written by the local people who lived them.

Got a story to add? We’d love to see it. Just remember the following guidelines:

Your story must be true.

It must be no longer than 1,000 words. Shorter is better. No epics here.

Is it one solid story, with a plot that moves from beginning to ending? (“Once upon a time, this happened and then this happened, and it all ended like this.”)

Focus on your personal experience. What were you seeing, hearing, thinking, feeling?

Expect a little kindly editing.

Send your stories to neighbors@columbian.com or P.O. Box 180, Vancouver WA, 98666. Call “Everybody Has an Editor” Scott Hewitt, 360-735-4525, with questions.
