Gun violence has increased dramatically this year. Not only are mass shootings on the rise, but the fear that drives many to purchase guns has made it dangerous just to knock on a stranger’s door or use their driveway to turn around if you have lost your way.
When will the insurance companies become a bigger player in the ongoing race to see who can own the most guns? Currently, in anticipation of future claims, companies that provide homeowner’s insurance routinely require information about things they consider hazards on your property. For example, swimming pools and certain breeds of dogs require safety mitigation and often increase your rates.
Now seems a good time to ask these questions and set premiums accordingly: Do you own guns? How many and what kind? How many high-capacity magazines? Do you have body armor?
It is past time to require that gun owners have insurance to pay medical bills and/or funeral expenses of any person injured or killed by their guns.
