Letter: Act locally against gun violence

This ongoing gun violence in our country makes me feel so sad, mad, and helpless. It appears clear that the current political climate makes it impossible for anything to be done on a national scale. What to do?

I concluded that if we can start locally to try to make our own community safer by doing something, then perhaps other communities will see that commonsense solutions do help. There are some encouraging signs. ilani has opened the Cyber Quest Arcade with only nonviolent game content. Secondly, the state of Washington has banned the sale of assault rifles.

We are doing something, not offering “thoughts and prayers.” Of course, that doesn’t affect those who may already have an assault rifle, but it is a start. My hope is that other states will also follow suit until they are in the majority. Will this prevent mass shootings? Of course not, but it would give doctors a better chance of saving lives than the unimaginable damage that is done by AR-15s. What else can we do here in Clark County? Let’s start!
