I was perplexed when reading two letters to the editor advocating against growth in our area (“Vancouver used to be quaint” and “Put brakes on growth,” Our Readers Views, July 26). A new study by the Building Industry Association of Washington claims that Clark County needs 15,703 new housing units and Washington state presently needs 252,000 new units.
So I’m wondering why we need all these new units and why people are moving here. Could it be that people like our 80-degree summer days rather than the 110-degree temperatures many parts of our country are experiencing? Could it be that people like the beautiful new Waterfront Vancouver with the nice hotels and restaurants? Could it be that some people don’t like to pay state income tax? Could it be that some people don’t like state laws banning books, restricting LGBTQ rights, and a woman’s right to choose?
It would be nice if we could all live where no one bothered us and no changes took place. Maybe those wanting this should arrange a trip on Elon Musk’s starship trip to Mars. You could have that Libertarian Utopia there as long as you didn’t need to share the oxygen with new arrivals or your offspring.
