BATTLE GROUND — Battle Ground police Sgt. Richard Kelly died Thursday after experiencing a medical emergency while on duty, the city announced Friday. He was 54.

“Serving as a member of the Battle Ground Police Department since 2005, Sgt. Kelly was an incredibly valued member of our community. A husband, father, brother, friend, neighbor, protector; Sgt. Kelly was many things to so many people. He will be deeply missed,” the city said in the statement.

Kelly was promoted to sergeant in 2019, according to the city’s Facebook page.

The city and police department are offering assistance to Kelly’s family.

“We ask that the community keep the family and the members of the Battle Ground Police Department in their thoughts during this difficult time,” the city said.

Following standard protocol, the Vancouver Police Department is conducting a death investigation.
