So the people of Dayton might want to shut down their public library because it contains books with a “sexualized” content, whatever the heck that means (“Close library? Plan reflects a disturbing trend,” In Our View, Aug. 15). The parents apparently think that the library is “grooming” their children.
I’d like to suggest that perhaps the real problem is that those parents who are so concerned about the library “grooming” their children are not adequately “grooming” their own kids at home. Their effort to shut the library down seems to say that the library is having more effect on their children’s attitudes and ideas than anything the parents can provide. It seems to admit that no matter what the parents do or say, the children will be more influenced by the library than by their upbringing.
Sad! There’s really a simple solution to this tempest in a teapot: Issue a library card to children whose parents approve of their children using the library and don’t admit the children of the frightened parents.
