Letter: Protect animals with bans

I was thrilled to see that The Columbian published “Vancouver City Council opposes foie gras, fur sales, sale of dogs at retail stores” (The Columbian, June 29). The city council unanimously passed three animal resolutions and I wish to express my gratitude to the council, especially to members Sarah Fox and Kim Harless for moving this legislation forward.

Growing up in Vancouver, I developed a love for nature and animals, and when I learned about the extreme cruelty of fur, foie gras, and puppy breeding, I became motivated to make a difference for animals through legislation.

I’m a junior at Skyview High School and I want to see a world where animals are treated fairly. While these resolutions are a stepping stone, they offer no real protection because they are not enforceable bans.

The majority of Vancouver residents care very much about the fair treatment of animals. We need enforceable animal welfare bans to ensure that Vancouver stays a compassionate city and to stop waiting for the “right time” and prevent animal cruelty in our special city.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
