The Vancouver Police Department said Thursday a corporal died unexpectedly over the weekend while off duty.

The department thanked the community for its thoughts and prayers following the death of Zachary “Zac” Merrill. The agency did not release how Merrill died and said it is respecting his family’s privacy.

The Vancouver Police Officers’ Guild created a fundraiser for his family. The fundraiser states Merrill was the unit leader of the crisis negotiation team and a captain and explosives ordinance disposal specialist with the U.S. Army. It says he was 43 years old.

“We all know how life can change in an instant. The unexpected loss of a loved one has left the Merrill family facing not only the emotional toll of grief but also the practical challenges that come with such a profound loss,” the fundraiser states.

The fundraiser can be found at donorbox.org/in-loving-memory-of-cpl-zac-merrill#info.
