Letter: Evergreen schools don’t add up

How is it possible that in May, Evergreen Public Schools claimed they were out of money and had to lay off teacher after teacher, yet in August they have funds available for 4.7 percent pay increases? I don’t care what portion comes from the state — you can’t lay off teachers and then have money left to pay any pay raises.

The teachers bemoan the loss of fellow educators, then turn around and attempt to enlarge their wallets at the expense of the less fortunate. I thought that collective bargaining would mean that the group might even forgo pay raises to keep every possible teacher employed in the district. Did anyone offer that concept in May? Collective unless it would cost senior people money and then the lowest rank are thrown overboard ASAP.

You can’t have sympathy for either side. They both act completely against the needs of the students they all claim to love and cherish. Money has corrupted them all.
