WASHOUGAL — On a cold and rainy December evening, Vancouver resident Scott Hampel dressed up to attend his grandchildren’s Christmas program in Washougal. Neither darkness nor torrential rains deterred him.

As he traveled on Highway 14 he was very dismayed to see a young dog running in the lanes of the highway. He immediately pulled his vehicle to the side of the road to save the dog.

As he ran after the dog, others could see what he was trying to do. Two trucks and several cars stopped and turned on their flashers so he could successfully scoop up the dog. He and Coley, the roughly 5-month-old lost puppy, were drenched but safe.

Coley was safely returned to her family, who are exceptionally grateful for the kindness of Hampel and the other motorists who helped rescue their beloved family dog.
