Letter: Help others during holidays

By Derek Chinn, executive director SW Washington Chapter, Red Cross, PORTLAND
Published: December 20, 2023, 6:00am

The holidays are a time for community. As we come together with loved ones over the next few weeks, it’s important for us to remember the ways that we can be a beacon of hope for those who need our support and care.

I think of the families whose lives have been turned upside down by emergencies, especially by the growing frequency and intensity of disasters. In fact, 2023 is a record year of weather events causing losses exceeding $1 billion. Our local volunteers have responded to around 800 disasters so far this year, including the wildfires this summer that burned more than 250,000 acres across Oregon and Southwest Washington.

Please join us to give comfort and hope to those affected by disasters. Visit www.redcross.org/CascadesGiving to make a financial donation. You can also help by booking a time to give blood or platelets or becoming a Red Cross volunteer.

It takes all of us to care for one another. During the holiday season, turn your compassion into action for the families who depend on our collective support.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
