Letter: Thanks to Evergreen school district

By Mike Johnson, VANCOUVER

After several years of retirement, I wanted to look into volunteering. After emailing my local school district about volunteer opportunities and never receiving a reply, I decided to contact Evergreen Public Schools. I’m certainly glad I did.

The application and background check process was quick and efficiently managed. The lady at the district office who helped me complete the process was so nice and supportive. When I entered the school, the front office staff greeted me warmly. They have shown me nothing but kindness and encouragement over the last three months.

Since I never had children in the public school system I wasn’t sure what to expect in the classroom. What an eye-opener. The teacher is, quite frankly, amazing. She is so patient and understanding with the young children. I’ve seen her manage multiple situations in her classroom with skill and professionalism. She makes it look so easy. She clearly cares for the children’s well-being, as well as their learning progress.

I was able to sit in on the Veterans Day assembly. What impressed me the most, in addition to the recognition of the veterans, was how much respect the principal and teachers showed to the children in attendance. My whole experience has been rewarding. I am grateful to Evergreen for the opportunity.
