Letter: Acknowledge problem with racism

It seems that some Clark County Council members wish to change the wording of the NAACP’s proclamation because it offends their sensibilities to acknowledge the truth. Violence against African Americans is a stain on our country that cannot be erased. We can only hope to educate our populace so moving forward, all Americans can enjoy the promise of a free country, with justice for all.

Words matter. What is the point of a proclamation if it refuses to admit there is a problem with racism? African Americans have resisted racism that prevents their families from thriving and from living their best lives. The ongoing oppression is evident, with police killings that continue despite our outrage, with workers who taunt fellow workers with racial slurs, with landlords who deny housing to people of color.

The first step toward reconciliation is admitting the truth, especially if it is not an “uplifting” truth.
