Winter is hitting Vancouver not with a bang but a moderate fizzle.
An incoming flash of cold air is expected to turn raindrops into a mix of hail and light snow later this evening, according to the National Weather Service.
Portions of Southwest Washington and northwest Oregon will receive a up to a one-inch dusting of snow, with less snow in areas closer to the Columbia River. Areas above 500 feet elevation will receive anywhere between 1 to 3 inches of snow.
From 10 p.m. tonight to 10 a.m. Tuesday, the air will be cold enough to freeze any precipitation, though it’s likely the snowfall begin closer to midnight and wrap up by 6 a.m., according to the weather service.
Tuesday’s temperatures won’t allow for the snow to stick, as it’s slated to reach a high of roughly 40 degrees. Those who are traveling should still use caution, because the slush may turn into icy patches, especially in places where the sun doesn’t shine.
Snowfall in mid-February isn’t unusual, though it should become less likely by the end of the month, according to the weather service.
