Clark County sheriff’s detectives are searching for a man who tried to carjack another man as he filled his car’s tires Tuesday in Hazel Dell.

Deputies responded at 11:44 a.m. to the AM-PM gas station at 609 N.E. 99th St. The suspect had walked from the nearby 99th Street Transit Center to the gas station. As the man filling his tires moved to the passenger’s side of his car, the suspect jumped into the driver’s seat and began backing up, the sheriff’s office said.

The victim jumped into the passenger’s seat, and both men struck each other in the face, the sheriff’s office said. The suspect then ran away. The incident was captured by the mini-mart’s surveillance camera.

Deputies set up a containment area, and a Battle Ground police K-9 tried to track the man. They were unable to locate him, according to the news release.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Tanya Johnson at 360-600-1505.
