Where honor is due

Friends of Fort Vancouver and the National Park Service present “Buffalo Soldiers: Fighting on Two Fronts.” See the movie and meet director Dru Holley 1-2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Fort Vancouver Visitor Center, 1501 E. Evergreen Blvd., Vancouver. Admission is free but guests must register at friendsfortvancouver.org. After the Civil War, Buffalo Soldiers served throughout the West until being deployed overseas in the Spanish-American War, war in the Philippines and World War I. Venerable, loyal and highly decorated, they remained segregated due to race until after World War II.

Pizza and the planet

The Watershed Alliance of Southwest Washington presents the free Food and Film Documentary Series at the Vancouver Community Library, 901 C St., Vancouver, on the fourth Tuesday of each month from February to June. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. and the films are shown 5-7 p.m. Food is provided through a partnership with Piehole Pizzeria, including gluten-friendly and vegan options. The Feb. 28 film is “Reflection: A Walk with Water.” For the complete list of movies, visit thewatershedalliance.org/?portfolio=film-series.

Where heroes live

The Historic Trust begins the Vancouver Barracks Military Association’s 2023 Military History Talk series with Maj. Jeff Davis’ presentation, “Waiting for the Cold War to Heat Up,” 6:30-8 tonight at O.O. Howard House, 750 Anderson St., Vancouver. After World War II, the Vancouver Barracks went from being the Pacific Northwest’s premier regular Army post to playing a more minor role. This change had major effects on the local community that are still felt today. Get more details at www.vbma.us. To attend, call 253 223-0125 or email jddavis@rocketmail.com.

Jazz and more jazz

The 20th Anniversary Portland Jazz Festival is happening through Saturday at various Portland locations, featuring musicians who are driving the evolution of jazz alongside National Endowment for the Arts jazz masters and Grammy Award-winners. Hear Storm Large’s Burlesque Big Band with the Ne Plus Ultra Jass Orchestra at 9 tonight. The Dave Holland Trio joins the Derrick Hodge Trio at 7 p.m. Friday. Enjoy the Hubert Laws Quintet and Brian Jackson at 7 p.m. Saturday and Mike Phillips at 10 p.m. Saturday. Get tickets at portland5.com/tags/portland-jazz-festival or pdxjazz.org.

Anka anthology

Paul Anka brings his “Greatest Hits His Way” show to ilani’s Cowlitz Ballroom at 7 p.m. Sunday. With more than 500 songs to his credit and 100 million albums sold, Anka is the only artist in history to have a song on the Billboard charts during seven consecutive decades, starting in 1957. Anka’s hits include “Put Your Head on My Shoulder,” “Diana,” “My Way” and the theme for “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.” Some tickets are still available for $39 and $59 at ilaniresort.com.
