Letter: Repeal Bush, Trump tax cuts

A brief review of 20th and 21st century national debt history shows that President Bill Clinton in the 1990s, with Republican help, had America on a path to eliminate our debt, but Republicans wouldn’t accept no debt and reversed course.

The Bush tax cuts and Bush wars added about a trillion dollars a year to deficit spending.

The debt grew through the Obama presidency and the Trump tax cuts kicked the deficit up another trillion dollars a year.

Simple arithmetic shows President George W. Bush and President Donald Trump account for at least $28 trillion of our debt without adding interest. We are now growing our debt well over $100 billion a year on interest alone.

The tax cuts may have been legal, but the effect was to cheat our nation. America provides opportunity and a myriad of services for entrepreneurs. With success comes a moral obligation to pay one’s fair share.

Responsible governance requires repealing both the Bush and Trump tax cuts that dramatically increase the wealth of the top 1 percent, but are bankrupting our nation.
